Eastern Carolina Jazz presents Willie E. Atkinson and the Transitional Jazz Quartet

The Flame Banquet Center and Eastern Carolina Jazz will continue their successful Sunday concert series in New Bern. This year's first event is scheduled for Sunday, January 22nd and features vocalist Willie E. Atkinson with the Transitional Jazz Quartet. Local performer John Van Dyke will host the evening.

Jazz and Blues vocalist Willie E. Atkinson's smooth delivery of rich baritone vocals has captured the hearts of audiences nationwide. He was raised in the rural region of Johnston County, NC, watching and listening to kinfolk add their musical voice to what would become known as the Piedmont Blues. Early on, his Grandmother taught him how to tell the story of a song without losing the beat. She said, "Just hold your head high, sing it like you mean it and pat your feet." He remembers her advice every time he takes center stage and tells the story of how "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square" or of a lonesome wanting heart "Round Midnight." His distinctive vocal styling is captured on his first CD release "Willie E. Atkinson - Live in Oriental, NC".

Willie and his wive Jacqueline B. Atkinson are owners and operators of WEJA Enterprises. WEJA's primary mission is to promote jazz and blues through productions, performances and education. The educational component is a historical review of jazz and blues with an emphases on North Carolina's jazz and blues artists whose contributions helped shape America's music cultural landscape.

Mr. Atkinson will be accompanied by The Transitional Jazz quartet, four extraordinary accomplished musicians in their own right, defined by their wealth of jazz experience, talent and ability to swing. Members of this swinging unit are David Fox, Pianist, Composer, Professor of Music Studies at Greensboro College, Chip Newton, Guitarist, Composer, Head of Guitar Studies, Elon College, Matt Kendrick, Double Bassist, Composer, instructor at Wake Forest Universtiy, and Glenn Pointe, Jazz Drummer, whose resume of jazz alumni include organist Jimmy Smith and pinaists Hampton Hawes.

THE JOINT IS JUMPIN'!

The Flame Catering & Banquet Centre and Eastern Carolina Jazz will team up again this month, bringing you another great evening of jazz entertainment at Smoke's Supper Club.
This once a month event is scheduled for Sunday, November 14th and as before it will include some of the finest talent from our community. John Van Dyke will host the evening which will feature the cast from New Bern Civic Theater's hit show Ain't Misbehavin'.

The cast will perform a variety of material including selections from the show. This will be a wonderful opportunity to get to know each of these talented Artists in their own right. The Flame's well-deserved reputation as a favorite New Bern dining spot will be on display as well. Chef Smoke is busy working on a special buffet for the event and the staff is gearing up for another great evening.

About 6 months ago I was introduced to LIFESTAGE Films out of Wilmington, NC. After looking through their websites I was SOLD! on the idea of hiring their company to produce a marketing piece for our sales team. Matt Davis, the company's owner (and my videographer), was amazing to work with as he was able to walk me effortlessly through the entire process. Being new at this sort of thing I, of course, asked a million questions. :) The end product came out beautifully and is now on display for the whole world to see!!

Considered one of the best jazz vocalists of all time, she has been an influence on many of the musicians who have followed in her footsteps.

Peter Lamb, Raleigh saxophonist. Has assembled a lineup of the Triangle area's jazz greats for a sizzling hot evening of jazz standards. The Wolves consist of vocalist and keyboardist Mark Well, George Knott of Atomic Rhythm All Stars on bass sax, Al Strong on trumpet, and drummer Stephen Koffman. With influences ranging Sonny Rollins and Coleman Hawkins to Armstrong and Ellington, (and everything good that lies in between). Peter Lamb and the Wolves' strength and appeal lies in the heart and the soul of this music. Lamb's arrangements of these familiar tunes cover a wide spectrum of musical textures and colors from the playful and high spirited to the smooth and sophisticated, with an edgy dose of soulful blues on the side. Our local favorites will be on hand to finish the evening with the traditional jazz jam.

The Eastern Carolina Jazz cooperative and Smoke's Supper Club present Atomic Rhythm All-Stars on Sunday, March 14th, 2010 at The Flame Catering and Banquet Centre.

Hailing from the Triangle area, the Atomic Rhythm All-Stars is a 7-piece band dedicated to preserving the music of the 1920's and the 1930's. With three horns, three rhythm, and vocalist Laura Windley, they faithfully recreate the red-hot jazz bands of the early jazz era.

The Atomic Rhythm All-Stars will also back up our traditional JazzFEST jam session to finish the evening with some special guests from our local jazz scene. Singer John Van Dyke will host the evening.

Our restaurant has been closed since September of last year and do you know, I still receive phone calls every day asking what night we serve crab legs. Each time I have to politely explain that for obvious reasons we are focusing all of our efforts into catering and The Flame Banquet Centre instead.

Jazz FEST New Bern

One Sunday per month The Flame Banquet Centre and the East Carolina Jazz Co Op come together to put on "Smoke's Supper Club" a wonderful performance and dinner for about 150-200 music lovers and people who just want to enjoy a fun evening out. Last night was a wonderful success! We enjoyed the musical styling of Mr. Stephen Franckevich, trumpet and vocals; Mrs. Ginger Garner, vocals; and a host of fabulous musicians playing drums, sax, trombone, base and keyboard!
